Dear SJV Community
Welcome to the end of Wk 7.
God, help me navigate whatever challenges I encounter this day. Be my comfort and my rock. Guide me to do Your will and be an instrument of your peace today and each day. Amen.
Reports Wk 9
Teacher's are busily working on your children's Semester 1 reports which will be available on Compass on Monday 23rd June. I am hoping that all parents have managed to speak with their teacher(s) during Parent/Teacher interviews, as these meetings should have given you a good idea of how your child is tracking and areas that require some extra attention.
Please note the terminology for reports in all Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn schools.
For Kindergarten students:
- Achievement in each subject is reported using a four-point scale (Above Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Working Towards Expectations, Experiencing Difficult
For Year 1 to Year 6 students:
-
Academic grades for each subject using a five-point scale from A-E will be reported using the ACT Common Grade Scale.
For all students:
-
Strand Achievement will be reported in English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment, PDHPE and Creative Arts using a five-point scale (Consistently, High, At Standard, Partial, Limited).
-
Engagement with Learning statements, which are taken directly from the Australian Curriculum, will provide specific information about your child’s Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility, using a three-point scale (Consistently, Usually, Developing, Needs Improvement).
-
Individual student comments will NOT be used in the Semester 1 Reports.
Carpark Reminder
Some parents in cars are stopping near the large gate where children forward in and out at the beginning and end of the school day. This is occurring mostly in the morning. A gentle reminder that if you want to stop to drop off, please do so safely outside the school hall in the drop-off and pick-up zone.
Disco - Thursday 26th June
A flyer will be sent out next week advertising our 2025 Disco. Remember there is a new format occurring, with the Disco starting at 2:30pm and finishing at 4:30pm, being supervised by teachers. For the students that don't want to participate, a quiet option in the library will be available until 3:10pm. Parents who are picking their children up after the disco will need to arrive by 4:20pm.
Kinder Enrolment Interviews
By the end of next week I will have completed Kinder interviews. It is shaping up to be a wonderful class with a good split of girls and boys for 2025. Our class is almost full so if you know anyone who is still looking for Kinder next year, they will need to get their application in now or they will miss out.
Long Service Leave
This year I have some planned and approved leave occurring each term, as such I will be taking LSL in Week 9 and 10. Fortunately, Nina De Rosa our Assistant Principal and Laura Matchett our Religious Education Coordinator will be able to continue the smooth running of SJV in my absence.
School Photos - 19th June
Don't forget to have your child in full winter school uniform for our school photos. Please make sure that they have their maroon jumpers on so that our photos will look great.
God Bless

Child Safeguarding Commitment
The safeguarding of our students is a key priority of St John Vianney’s.
Safeguarding is a term used to describe the protection of and human rights of vulnerable people. This may be due to their age, culture or trauma background, or they may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Anyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play. Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn is committed to keeping children safe in all schools.
We have adopted the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Child Safeguarding Commitment, which states:
Here is SJV's Child Safeguarding Commitment:
Listening to the voices of children Jesus said:
"Let the little come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs” MT18
- St John Vianney’s Primary School is committed to child safety.
- We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers.
- St John Vianney’s is committed to our children being safe, happy and empowered participants of our community.
- We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently in accordance with our robust policies and procedures.
- St John Vianney’s is committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early, and removing and reducing these risks.
- We have legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety.
- St John Vianney’s has robust recruitment practices to reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing School Community Council members, school staff and volunteers.
- We are committed to regularly training and educating our School Community Council members, staff and volunteers on child abuse risks.
- St John Vianney’s is committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability.
- We have specific policies and procedures in place that support our School Community Council members, staff and volunteers to achieve these commitments.
A Health-Conscious Community
As winter has begun, we are at that time of year when sickness is prevalent. Over the past few weeks, we have had several staff members away, and unfortunately, there are times when we cannot provide relief teachers due to high demand. During these instances, we do our best to cover classes with other staff members. However, there are occasions when children are placed in another class with 'A day away pack'.
If your child is ill, please keep them at home for their own benefit and to prevent spreading the illness to other students and staff. Ensure that your emergency contacts are up-to-date so we can quickly reach you if your child becomes ill or is injured at school. If your child needs medication at school, you must complete an “Administration of Medication” form, available at the Front Office.
The 2025 school photos will be taken on Thursday, 19th June . On this day, students are kindly reminded to wear their full winter school uniforms, including jumpers, to ensure a unified and polished look in the photographs. MSP has provided information on how to order, and you can place orders through the Compass Portal. Once you have submitted your Individual Photo order, you can then place your Sibling Photo order. Please note that these MUST be ordered before midnight on the day of the photo. If you have any questions regarding the photography service or packages available for purchase, please contact the MSP team on 02 6255 9208 or by email canberra.office@msp.com.au.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Australian, state and territory governments have agreed on a new approach to collecting data on school students with disability. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability NCCDSSD) provides Australian schools, parents, education authorities and the community with information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive.
The national data collection on students with disability reinforces the existing obligations that schools have towards students under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. It counts the number of students who are supported under these obligations based on the professional judgement of teachers and their understanding and knowledge of their students.
At SJV adjustment data is collected through a child's Personal Plan. More information about the collection of data can be found: https://www.nccd.edu.au

Come Holy Spirit
Come Spirit like rain, refresh, renew, revitalise.
Come Spirit like fire, embolden, enlighten, enable.
Come Spirit like a mighty wind, move, challenge, enkindle.
Come Spirit like wave, move, tear down, lift up.
Come Spirit, come Breath, draw us close, make song, bring intimacy.
Come Spirit, come Love, make one, make justice, make peace.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
Our Winter Woolies Day will be held on Thursday 26th June (Week 9). Winter Woolies Day is our annual event to encourage donations for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. On this day, we ask students to bring in donations of the following items:
- Blankets
- Gloves
- Socks
- Jackets
- Beanies
- Sleeping bags
Students can wear their favourite winter woolies (favourite jumper, hoodie, oodie) in exchange for a donation of these much needed supplies for the Vinnies Night Patrol van. The van will be visiting the school on this day so students can put their donations in the van themselves. Our local volunteers will quickly distribute these items to those in need. We encourage you to give what you can.
As usual, we are always looking for donations for our hygiene station which is located in the school’s foyer area. We welcome donations of new and sealed hygiene products such as
- Oral hygiene products (toothpaste, toothbrushes)
- Deodorant, body spray, and perfume
- Body wash and soap
- Hair care items (shampoo, conditioner)
- Face wash and skincare products
- Moisturiser and hand sanitiser
- Sanitary products
- Toiletries bags
SPAR - Parents and Friends Prayer Group
Our SPAR Parents and Friends Prayer Group will be held regularly on Thursday mornings at 8:45am in the space between the canteen and the hall, and will run for 10 minutes. A reminder that the group is open to everyone regardless of faith background, practising or non-practising Catholics, those who pray regularly, those who haven’t prayed in a while, anyone considering becoming Catholic, anyone curious about how we pray here at school, or anyone who would like 10 minutes of peace and calm in their week! You don’t need to attend each week, it will always be open to anyone who wants to come along.
Parents and friends with younger children are welcome to bring them along where they will be watched by Year 6 students in the hall. The prayer group will focus on reflections on the forthcoming Sunday’s Gospel, Christian meditation, significant events and feast days central to the Catholic faith or current community, national or global events. No one will be asked to share or verbally participate unless they feel comfortable to do so. I’d encourage you to consider whether this might be something you give a try this year.
Please feel free to contact me: laura.matchett@cg.catholic.edu.au with any questions or feedback (particularly regarding the timing, if this is a barrier for you to attend). I hope to see you there.
Sacraments 2025
Registrations for the Sacrament of Confirmation for 2025 will close on Tuesday 1st July. Families of students who are eligible to make one of the Sacraments (Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation) this year are encouraged to visit the Parish website: https:stjv.westoncreekblogspot.com/ for information and registration details for each of the Sacraments.

It is possible to receive more than one Sacrament in the same year, however, the Sacraments usually need to made in order (i.e. Reconciliation, followed by First Eucharist, then Confirmation). ?✨ Wanted: Lost Library Books ✨?
Reward: Eternal Gratitude and Good Book Karma
Some of our library books have pulled a disappearing act! They're probably lounging under beds, trapped in backpacks, or living it up on home bookshelves. But deep down... they miss us.
If you've got a runaway library book, no shame, no blame — just bring it back! We promise they won’t be mad. In fact, they'll be thrilled to return to their shelf-side buddies.
Help our books find their way home. They're overdue for a reunion!

Fridays Biggest Morning Tea was a great success!!
A heartfelt thank you to all the students who supported our fundraiser by purchasing a cupcake (or two)! We’re especially grateful to the generous families who baked such a delicious assortment of treats — the Ayers, Henderson, Hughes-Bell, Steen, and Odonkor families. Your kindness truly made a difference.
A big shout-out also goes to the families who contributed through my Facebook donation portal — your support means so much.
So far, we've raised an amazing $489, with a few frozen cakes still available for sale. Let’s keep the momentum going!
Many Thanks again
